ITClamp Hemorrhage Control System from Innovative Trauma Care.

The current model of bleeding control in the U.S. military focuses on addressing what is called the trauma triad of death: acidosis, hypothermia and coagulopathies, a conceptual model credited to Col. John Holcomb, MD. The key to this model is achieving rapid homeostasis, with a driving philosophy that every drop of blood is valuable and, in the short term, irreplaceable.

That goal of saving as much blood as possible is much more attainable thanks to an incredibly unique product from Innovative Trauma Care, the ITClamp Hemorrhage Control System.

At first glance, you might think you were looking at an over-engineered chip clip, both by appearance and operation. However, that is where the similarities end. The ITClamp is a self-locking surgical clamp with suture needles on both sides that anchor it in place. The device measures a mere 2" x 2" and can be deployed in just 3–5 seconds. Just snap it in place over the wound, which breaks the safety seal (preventing inadvertent closure), and you get an immediate fluid-tight and airtight seal.

Even with large injuries such as might be seen with a close range shotgun blast or an encounter with an IED, you can take as many ITClamps as necessary and literally “knit” the wound closed, by placing them side by side until the defect is addressed.

The small size of the ITClamp gives it incredible versatility. It can be used for most any kind of venous bleed, and is just as effective for arterial bleeds of the junction or extremities, essentially any compressible bleeding site.

I know of no other device with the versatility and capabilities of the ITClamp Hemorrhage Control System. Using a revered term that I reserve for the most unique devices, the ITClamp is a stunning example of elegant simplicity—almost immediate fluid-tight and airtight wound closure, with a 2" device.

In the 10+ years that I’ve been privileged to do the Innovation Awards for EMS World Magazine, the ITClamp Hemorrhage Control System stands as one of the most impressive products I have ever seen and it brings with it the chance to save countless lives.
